9-5 Jobs are the Worst for Creative Individuals
The job market today is awful for creative individuals. Creatives should not spend 8 hours a day entering data. They should not spend all of their time listening to a boss spew out exactly what to do. They should be given opportunity to create. This is the workplace that we have created, however. Creative individuals are not followers. They are also not leaders. Creatives are meant to work on their own and when they work best is honestly, any time of day, but NOT 8-12 hours in a row. They will work just as hard as anyone else, but they will work much differently.
Creatives need a lot of time in between projects. This helps them come up innovative and unique ideas. This is why some work from home Graphic Designers seem to thrive. They have a lot of time to actually discover new ideas by taking the time to breathe and think. They can take a walk in the middle of the day. They can free their mind in order to come up with new ideas. If they are stuck in an office becoming a part of the drone society, they feel stuck and actually lose their creativity.
Creatives should work for themselves or at least companies that inspire innovation, like ModCloth....because if they become a part of the cookie cutter society, they will lose their creativity thus making them worthless. This is why many creative's move from job to job. They can't find a place that allows them to be creative. They get bored with the same projects day in and day out, so they seek out a new job in order to keep their brains active and alert. Creatives will produce better work and more quality work if they are allowed to work at their own pace (but they should be paid the same as the non-creative's, they're still doing the same amount of work but just not in a 9-5 setting). Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and do 5 hours of work right then. Why don't employers see that it can actually be a positive thing?
Are you a creative? Do you need to get out your rut? Do it. Don't wait. Start a business for yourself, start a blog, become an freelance writer, graphic designer or photographer. Do it before you lose all desire to create. Do it so that your soul will feel full.
